Directions

There are three beautiful ways to get from the airport to Waimanalo. Take your pick!

  • Method 1: H-3...The Fastest -- Includes a beautiful mountain ride on America's most beautiful stretch of highway.

As you're leaving the airport or rental car agency, go to the H-1 Freeway, WESTBOUND.

Travel west for about four miles until you see the H-3 Freeway exit in the right lane. Take this exit for H-3 Freeway NORTH (you can't go south) toward "Kaneohe."

Ride up the mountain, through the tunnels, and back down again, until you see the "Kamehameha Hwy" exit in the right lane. Take this exit, then turn right on Kamehameha Hwy.

Go about one mile until the road essentially deadends on the Pali Highway. Turn left on the Pali Highway.

Go about two miles until you see the third stoplight at the Kalanianaole Highway (Castle Hospital is on the left and a large fountain across the highway is on the right. If you drive into the Kailua main square, you went too far). Turn right on the Kalanianaole Highway.

Go about five miles into Waimanalo. You will go up a long incline, then down a long decline, then wind through the "main business section" of Waimanalo (which consists of a few small shops and a Jack in the Box). Continue along until you see a McDonalds on the left (they're everywhere, aren't they?!).

Once you see the McDonalds, you are on the border of our neighborhood. The next ten streets on the left all go directly toward the beach and deadend on Laumilo Street. Turn left on any of the first few streets,  and go until it deadends on Laumilo St.

Take a right on Laumilo St. and drive until you see the property on the left (beachside). It's almost at the end of the street. You will see a white wooden gate on the driveway, and a large brown stone wall with overhanging plants bordering the front of the property.  It will likely look something like this:

Park on the street, and come on in! There is a little rope on the gate that lifts up the latch. Come around to the front of the main house, and look for someone to welcome you!

  • Method 2: The Pali Highway...Nice if you are coming from Honolulu or Waikiki -- Includes a beautiful mountain ride on a beautiful mountain highway, with a chance to stop at the Pali Lookout on the way.

As you're leaving the airport or rental car agency, go to the H-1 Freeway, EASTBOUND.

Travel east for about four miles until you see the Pali Highway exit in the right lane. Take this exit, then turn LEFT at the light onto the Pali Highway.

Ride up the mountain, and when you get near the top, you will see the turnout for the "Pali Lookout." It's a great scenic stop, and rather cool, but if you stop, be cautious because there are opportunistic thieves that sometimes prey on unattended vehicles.

Returning to the Pali Highway, go through the tunnels, and back down the mountina, until you see the fourth stoplight at the Kalanianaole Highway (Castle Hospital is on the left and a large fountain across the highway is on the right.

Turn left on the first street Aloiloi,  and go until it deadends on Laumilo St.

  • Method 3: Scenic Coast...The Most Scenic -- An astonishingly pretty coastal drive. You have to first get through Honolulu and Waikiki (via a highway), which is fine outside of normal weekday commute times, but can be a bit traffic-laden at those times. We recommend using this only on weekends, or between 9am-2pm on weekdays.

As you're leaving the airport or rental car agency, go to the H-1 Freeway, EASTBOUND.

Travel east for about ten miles until you see the Highway turn into a six lane road, then keep going until it turns into a two lane road. At this point, you will be going up a small hill, and at the top, you will see the turnout for Hanauma Bay (the most popular snorkeling bay).

Continue along the highway, and you will pass a number of scenic beaches and turnouts. Keep going until you see a 7-11 on the right side of the road (Yes, they seem to be everywhere too!).

Once you see the 7-11, , you are on the border of our neighborhood. The next ten streets on the right all go directly toward the beach and deadend on Laumilo Street. Turn right on the first street Wailea, and go until it deadends on Laumilo St.

Take a left on Laumilo St. and look for the property on the right (beachside).

Which way to go?

They're all very nice drives, but here are some thoughts...

  • If you're in a hurry, take the H-3. It's fastest at all times of the day and week. Expect 30-45 minutes.

  • If it's weekday commute times, take the H-3. It will be smooth sailing.

  • If it's middle of the day and clear, and you're not in a big hurry, take the Coast route. Expect one hour plus any sightseeing stops along the way.

  • If you want to see Honolulu first, then you might want to come up the Pali. It's fast and pretty.
